St Anthony is the original Avens group residential care home and has been caring for people since 1994.
Who We Are
St Anthony is the original Avens group residential care home and has been caring for people since 1994. It has become one of the South East’s best-known centres for adults with learning disabilities.
The home is managed by Ms Gabriela Grad, who is supported in her role by the manager of our supported living service, Mr Greg Mierzejewski. They effectively manage a large team of care assistants, who work cohesively to look after people in a safe and caring home environment.
What We Do
St. Anthony provides individually tailored care and support packages for adults with learning disabilities and associated challenging behaviour. We are able to provide a range of services and support to people with Learning Disabilities within our regulated activities of personal care without nursing.
We aim to maximise independence with care and support which is planned to meet assessed needs. The level of support provided to individuals is decided following a care needs assessment and consultation with an individual’s circle of support.
The staffing ratio is 1:3 throughout the home. Many customers are also supported on a 1:1 basis, as agreed in their care package. This ensures high quality and effective support for all customers.
We are proud of our professional workforce who are trained by our own City & Guilds accredited learning centre, Tailored Training Ltd. All staff receive regular training and it is company policy to support any staff towards gaining a qualification in Health and Social Care, if they do not already have one.
Person Centred Planning
We are committed to delivering person-centred care and support, personalised to individual needs and wishes. We do this by listening to and working closely with an individual’s friends, families and advocates to adapt our care to best suit the person. We also liaise closely with other health care professionals, including East Sussex County Council, so that the best possible care can and is being provided.
Service users all have a person centered activity and support plan to suit their needs and interests. Access the local community of Crowborough is supported and many of our service user’s attend local centres for day services. Our weekly group to Hadlow College’s Princess Christian Farm site in Kent is a firm favourite and groups also visit sensory rooms in Lewes, hydrotherapy at Burrswood and Chailey Futures Life Skills Centre. Some of our service users volunteer at the Walled Garden in Groombridge and the Horse Rescue Trust in Uckfield.We run gardening groups, both at St Anthony and at our own allotment, where vegetables are grown and then used in the St Anthony’s kitchen. Our drama group is popular and we regularly have outside entertainers come in for themed social evenings.
Our Home
Registered to provide care for 29, the property is split into three main flats made up of a mix of accommodation to suit a variety of requirements. For service users who are physically disabled, specially adapted ground floor rooms are provided. There is a further ‘transition’ flat available for those who are almost but not quite ready, for the step from residential care to supported living. Here, independent living is encouraged but staff are always on hand, should the need arise.
St Anthony benefits from its position on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. There is good access by road and rail to Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, Brighton and Lewes.
